Kitty
and the Can Openers are the newest songwriting prodigy from Belfast,
one of the UK's most vibrant and promising music scenes, comprising
Ciara O'Neill's haunting and graceful Celtic lilt, Ronan Doran's
acoustic guitar folkery and John and Paul's lithe and often melodic
rhythm section.
There is a sadness, a strangeness and a distinct, if enigmatic,
emotional punch to their music; an attempt, as Ronan would have
it, to "scoop songs out of the stratosphere like pennies from
behind you ear"!
The band have appeared to widespread acclaim on Northern Ireland's
radio U-105, and recently completed a performance on cult podcast
Balcony TV. Competing in Slice the Pie's All Genres 8 showcase in
summer 2008, KATCO were chosen from hundreds by virtue of the freshness
and intimacy of a songcraft that prizes, above all, engagement over
dancibility, and a little imagination in the commonplace.
